DIGITAL DISPLAY PANEL AND VANDAL ATTACKS

The TV-B-Gone (pictured below) is a small universal infrared remote control.  This remote has one function:  to turn TV’s off.  Recently, pranksters have adopted this simple remote to turn off digital display panels.  Because the latest version has a range of 100 meters, pranksters can turn off entire fleets of digital display panels in public settings.  This includes transport stations and shopping centres.  This is all done with a single click.

Unexpectedly shutting down a digital display panel at a railway or bus station can have lots of negative effects.  For example, commuters can be left feeling frustrated and angry when they can’t access the transport information they need to get to their next destination.  Likewise, an attack on a shopping centre digital display panel can lead to lower ad generated revenue and angry shop owners who have missed out on valuable advertising time.

HOW TO STOP TV-B-GONE ATTACKS ON YOUR DIGITAL DISPLAY PANEL

The MetroSpec Infrared (IR) Lockout provides LCD panel owners with a defence against TV-B-Gone Attacks.  This is because our IR Lockout works as a gatekeeper by preventing unauthorised remote controls from turning off public information displays (PID’s).

HOW THE IR LOCKOUT WORKS TO PROTECT YOUR DIGITAL DISPLAY PANEL

The IR Lockout works through the use of a 4-digit security pin.  This 4-digit security pin blocks unauthorised remote control signals.  Once entered, this 4 digit pin allows authorised users to remotely control a digital display panel for up to 10 minutes.  However, after 10 minutes, the IR Lockout will automatically re-establish to prevent an attack.

IR LOCKOUT FEATURES

  • Locks out unauthorised remotes such as TV-B-Gone.
  • User programmable lockout code.
  • Automatically relocks after 10 minutes.
  • Low power.
  • Small footprint.
  • Compatible with the NEC IR transmission protocol.
  • Retrofittable to existing systems.

IR LOCKOUT INSTALLATION

A qualified service technician will securely install the IR lockout solution inside your digital display panel.  The technician places the IR Lockout between the IR sensor and LCD control board.  As a result, the IR Lockout blocks out all unauthorised control signals and stops any tampering with your digital display panel in public spaces.

Additionally, a MetroSpec IR Lockout comes with a one year warranty.  To find out more about our IR Lockout please click here or contact us on +61 7 3868 4255.
